February 15, 1999 Volume 1, No. 3PENSION UPDATE
Dean E. Gillese presented her report to all members and beneficiaries of the Academic Pension Plan on Wednesday, January 27.
She said that her recommendations should give sufficient funds to the
pensioners
to index their pensions. Several actuaries agree with her assessment.
Active members
should receive enough money to eliminate the 1% tax.
The Joint Committee on Pensions will meet on February 25 to determine if the Report should be accepted.
A Special General Meeting of Faculty Association members will be scheduled
as soon as the Joint Committee makes its recommendation to the Board of
Governors and the Faculty Association.
McCONNELL BURSARY
The Faculty Association has contributed $5000 to the John McConnell Bursary organized by the Environmental Studies Student Association.
John is an active and valuable member of the Association. Over
the past two decades, he has devoted countless hours of service to the
Association. He was elected to the Executive for the 1991-3, and 1995-7
terms and has served on the negotiating team, on the
grievance committee 1986-87 and 1991-97, as Senior
Grievance Officer in 1991-92, as Chair of the Negotiating Team for the
1983-84,1984-86 and 1986-87 contracts, and as Secretary to the Executive
from
1995-97.
DEPARTMENT HEADS MEETING
The Executive members of the Faculty Association will meet with the
Department Heads on Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. in the Faculty
Club to deal with terms and conditions of employment for Department Heads
and negotiations.
PARKING ACTION COMMITTEE
In our last newsletter we indicated that we were seeking answers to
a number of
questions regarding an appeal to the courts of the designation of a
parking tax benefit.
The cost per person to file an appeal to the federal court is $100. The matter cannot be dealt with as a class action, so every individual would have to file a separate appeal. The Faculty Association could not initiate a court action, but could assist members who wished todo so. To that end, we would like to compile a list of individuals who would want to initiate court action if Revenue Canada acts upon its November 26, 1998 indication that the benefit would be assessed at values between $66.00 per month for an electrified stall and $60.00 per month for a cold stall.
We have been advised that Revenue Canada is reexamining the assessment at this time.
If you are interested in pursuing an appeal through the courts, please contact the Association at 966-5609. The Association will need to know how many members wish to take action.
