USFA e-Letter: Cuts are not painless
The University has asked units to cut back base budgets to the tune of $10 million. The University is a labour intensive operation, and cuts of this magnitude cannot be achieved with simple economies. As a result, the University will lose people, and it will lose the accumulated effort they put into the organization. Ultimately, someone will lose the benefit of the time formerly provided by a teacher, a marker, a tutor, a receptionist, an advisor, a programmer, a carpenter or a custodian.On Campus News reported that the Provost stated "the deans are reporting the budget adjustments are generally having a negligible effect [sic] on students, and if the University's three percent budget reduction is resulting in 'devastating' change, 'there's something wrong with our systems' ".
