USFA e-Letter: Face-to-Face Meetings in Departments and Colleges

Our Collective Agreement operationalizes the principle of collegiality in many ways. For example, renewal, tenure, and promotion decisions require a quorum of two-thirds, to ensure high participation in these important decisions.

As well, assignment of duties is done by the Department Head following consultation and discussion with faculty at a meeting of the departmental faculty, subject to the approval of the Dean. The same is true for non-departmentalized Colleges, the Library and other units.

Units at the U of S, may even elect to have merit decisions handled by a committee of colleagues. At many universities, senior administrators handle the merit process unilaterally.

A meeting is a place where everyone has a chance to be recognized to speak, where everyone can hear the entire conversation, and where votes and objections can be recorded. Although recent changes to the Collective Agreement permit teleconferencing, an email memo does not have the same status as a meeting.

Participation is essential. Don't give up your right to directly participate in your unit’s decisions.
