USFA e-Letter: Assignment of Duties

You have recently received a bulletin from the Association on Assignment of Duties. Please read it carefully.

The key points are summed up in the single phrase “…duties shall be assigned by the Department Head following consultation and discussion with members at a meeting of the departmental faculty, subject to the approval of the Dean.” (Article 11.1). (Parallel language applies to other units.)

While the Employer has the right to assign duties, these duties must be assigned fairly in accordance with Article 11.2.

Members of an academic unit have a responsibility to contribute to all aspects of the life of their unit and the University, and to ensure that, over the long term, duties are assigned equitably among members of the unit. A meeting dedicated to a candid discussion and implementation of Article 11.2 is where you can raise your concerns collegially.

Members of an academic unit can also address fairness concerns by modifying their unit’s Guidelines for Assignment of Duties.

For more details, please check the recent bulletin.
